Club 57 flyers, 1979 - 83 |
Alden Projects™ presents Club 57: Flyers 1979-83, an exhibition and book launch at The NY Art Book Fair at MoMA / P.S. 1 Queens. This retrospective look at Club 57, the experimental hang-out and venue for visual, performance, and musical artists located in the basement of the Holy Cross Polish National Church at 57 St. Mark’s Place, consists of a collection of 47 vintage flyers. All designed and photocopied by, or documenting early performances or exhibitions of artists including Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, John Sex, Klaus Nomi, Ann Magnuson, James Nares, John Lurie, Ondine, David Wojnarowicz, Frank Holliday, Bikini Girl, Kathy Acker, Wendy Wild, Sam Shepherd and many more. Alden Projects™ also presents works from the Club 57 era, including a subway drawing by Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer’s Truisms in Spanish (1979) and Inflammatory Essays in English (1979-82), Jean-Michel Basquiat’s first exhibition catalogue (edition of 100), Real Estate Show posters, ephemera from the Mudd Club and Max’s Kansas City and more.
Alden Projects™ also launches Club 57: Flyers 1979-83, a
spiral bound book documenting the flyers in the photocopied medium of their
original issue, including a discussion of the flyers and their historical
context by Todd Alden. Available for twenty dollars (don’t pay more!), this
book is published in an edition of 57 numbered examples.
Alden Projects™ also very pleased to announce our collaboration
with Brooklyn-based artist, Nils Karsten on the release of two new editioned
woodblock monotypes. They are also on view at Alden Projects™’ booth.
Finally, Alden Projects™ also presents other
unrelated rarities, including rarely seen photographs of a Joseph Beuys
performance, a photograph of a James Lee Byars performance, a large collection
of artist’s books by Sol Lewitt, rare monographs by Donald Judd, and more.
